Umrah is a beautiful act of worship that can be performed at any time of the year. If this is your first Umrah, the rites may feel unfamiliar, but they are simple once you understand them. Here is a clear, step-by-step guide.
1. Ihram
Before crossing the Miqat (the boundary for entering the state of Ihram), take a bath (ghusl), and men put on the two white unstitched sheets of Ihram. Women wear modest, simple clothing. Make the intention (niyyah) for Umrah and begin reciting the Talbiyah:
Labbaik Allahumma labbaik, labbaika la sharika laka labbaik. Innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.
Once in Ihram, avoid its prohibitions — such as using perfume, cutting hair or nails, and (for men) covering the head.
2. Tawaf
On reaching Masjid al-Haram, perform Tawaf: seven circuits around the Kaaba, starting and ending at the line facing the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad), keeping the Kaaba on your left. After Tawaf, pray two rak'ahs — behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible — and drink Zam Zam water.
3. Sa'i
Next, perform Sa'i: walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, beginning at Safa and ending at Marwah, remembering the patience and trust of Hajar (may Allah be pleased with her).
4. Halq or Taqsir
Finally, men either shave the head (halq) or trim the hair (taqsir); women trim a small amount, about a fingertip's length. With this, your Umrah is complete and the restrictions of Ihram are lifted.
